Food You MUST Not Miss in the Bazaar Ramadan Miri!

Ramadan tiba~ Ramadan tiba~ Ramadan is here! It marks a period of fasting and spiritual growth before Hari Raya Aidilfitri for Muslims. As we Malaysians know it, the month of Ramadan also means there will be festive Ramadan bazaars, special buffet set-ups, and exciting break-fast moments. Bazaar Ramadan usually offer varieties of food, and we’re here to tell you what food you MUST not miss at Bazaar Ramadan in Miri! Don’t stick around if you want to miss it. *joking*

1. Murtabak

Now, I know we can get Murtabak daily at the kedai mamak or stalls, but there’s just something about this food during Ramadan that makes it taste a little bit different. It may be just our mindset, but who knows. Either way, it’s delish! Go get yourself one with different fillings. Be it chicken, beef, go get it!

Also, do you see the picture on the left, that’s maggi murtabak! I overheard someone said “Eh, I can also do at home!” but sis, lemme tell you, that maggi murtabak caught my attention because of the size, it was so thick and big. Wanted to order, but the brother said need to wait for an hour! Laris oh, even though can make yourself. 😛

Many stalls in Miri’s Bazaar Ramadan sell murtabak, so it’s up to you to choose which you prefer.

The uniquely Sarawakian dish, our bubur pedas. It’s a favorite not only among Muslims but also in other communities. I get excited about this during Ramadan because this dish is technically only available during Ramadan. *cries* Bubur pedas are curry-like in color and have a thick consistency, filled with various vegetables and meat. Besides, bubur pedas can be found at Ramadan bazaars priced from RM3 per serving.

Apam Balik is a dessert that originates from China! Bet you didn’t know that. Indeed, we learn something new everyday, huh? Apam balik is a crispy yet fluffy Asia pancake turnover. Then, it’s filled with roasted peanuts, sugar and butter, and folded in half. However, the fluffiness and the taste vary depending on how the person makes it. I personally love them crazy fluffy!

Next, we have satay and chicken wings! How can we miss this? Satay is the Southeast Asian dish of seasoned, skewered, and grilled meat, served with a sauce. Be it beef, chicken or lamb, all satays are yumss! Can we call a it Bazaar Ramadan if there’s no Satay and chicken wing? Another food you can get on normal days, but seems so bizarre at the bazaar. See what I did there? 😛

Next on our list is, ayam tempayan in other words, chicken in a pot! What’s so special about them? First and foremost, the chicken will be marinated overnight with spice, more spice, and everything nice! Then it will be cooked inside the pot using charcoal. Also, this method of cooking makes the chicken more soft and tender.

It’s quite a rare find and we found them at one of the Bazaar Ramadan in Miri. Be sure to check them out at:

This is a special one! We found Kambing Golek at the Desa Pujut Bazaar Ramadan! One of the booths there sells Kambing Golek. It’s a refreshing sight to see something one usually finds at a hotel during Bazaar Ramadan here in Miri, correct me if I’m wrong. Hence, do not, I repeat, do not miss this chance to get them. Run, don’t walk!

Who doesn’t know Kuih Takir, or also known as Kuih Perahu. (psstt, if it wasn’t for Ramadan, I wouldn’t know their actual names, I would just describe how it looks like. haha). Kuih Takir is super popular among Sarawakians. Indeed, their creamy taste of coconut and rice flour, is definitely a yums in my tums. This kuih is especially famous in Sarikei and in Pusa town.

You can find them at:

9. Putu Piring

Next, we have the Putu Piring. It is a round-shaped, traditional steamed rice flour kuih and is filled with palm sugar. What I found really interesting was how it was made. The uncle uses stainless steel molds with round shape to shape it then puts it in the folds it in a wet cloth. After that, he places it on the mold as seen above. If you want to see how they make it, go to the Bazaar Ramadan Padang MBM, Miri.

Also, the uncle makes it fresh on the go. Other than that, you need to wait a while though, due to the popular demand! We got to order a set of 3 putu piring, and it was delicious!

Kuih redem or also known as peneram is a local favorite! These can be found at the Bazaar Ramadan Desa Pujut and also Saberkas. Other than that, we also found Umai! Umai is the Melanau’s dish so it’s pretty refreshing to see it sold at the Bazaar. (available at Bazaar Ramadan Desa Pujut) Looking for something sweet? Watch out for Bombolonis! We found them both in Bazaar Ramadan Desa Pujut and also the Bazaar Ramadan Padang MBM!

Alrighty, on to the kuihs and food that we didn’t manage to get a glimpse of at this year’s Bazaar Ramadan. I might be wrong though, so if you find any of these kuih at the bazaar, comment down below, let’s help each other foodies!

10. Kuih Bongkol

Another favorite kuih of mine that didn’t see the light of day, Kuih Bongkol! Kuih Bongkol is also one of the popular traditional kuih during Ramadan in Sarawak. The month of Ramadan in Sarawak would not be complete without this kuih!

If you are fasting here in Sarawak, it is especially famous in Kuching and Samarahan areas. In West Malaysia, Kuih Bongkol is available on ordinary days whereas, in East Malaysia, it’s a little hard to find them outside of the Ramadan season. Thus, it’s one of the most anticipated kuih here!

Although we weren’t able to find it at the Bazaar, we found an aunty on Facebook who sells them home-based. At only 50cents/pcs, that’s such a steal!

The iconic sugar-glazed sweet potato doughnuts! Kuih Keria is Malaysia’s traditional kuih and sweet potatoes are the main character for this kuih. The Keria will be deep fried, then coated generously with palm sugar! Yummssss. *drools* They are super famous for their crispiness and fluffiness, making it one of my favorite kuihs! So, you MUST try this if you have not. They used to have this back in pre-MCO days at the Bazaar Ramadan Desa Pujut, but we couldn’t find it in our trip to the bazaar earlier this week.

12. Celorot

Celorot or also known as Jelurut is a traditional sweet snack you cannot miss! It’s made of soft and sweet rice flour cake and then wrapped with coconut leaves, shaped into a cone as seen above. I couldn’t find them at the Bazaar Ramadan that we went to, or maybe they were out of it. So, if you guys find it, share with our fellow foodies.

That’s all for this entry! Even though some of this food are available on ordinary days, something about them during the Ramadan season makes them more..how do I say this? Desirable? Is that even the right word to describe it *laughs*, but I hope you get what I mean, unless I syok sendiri. Also, share with us if there’s any other food one must not miss too if it’s not listed.

Also, Bazaar Ramadan starts 3rd April 2022 until 2nd May 2022. You have a whole month for the hunt, don’t miss out! Do bear in mind though, to always stay safe, adhere to SOPs and enjoy!
